Telling your mum
Letting your mum know you need a bra can be nerve wracking. Just say ‘mum I have different underwear needs nowadays’ and gesture towards your chest area. She’ll get the message. She knows the score cos about 400 years ago, she was a girl too.
Knowing when to get one
It’s your body so it’s your choice. Comfort, fashion, sport, cleavage enhancement and everybody else having one are all excellent reasons to strap up. Equally some women, hardly ever wear bras and that’s fine too.
Getting measured
Most department stores offer an essential free measuring service in the changing rooms. Whipping your lady bumps out for the first time can be embarrassing. But your measurer has seen hundred of boobs before. One more pair won’t matter to her. Plus you’ll probably never meet her again so who cares?
Picking a style
This comes down to personal preference and you might have to try on a lot before you find a fave.
- Sport bras stop boobs getting sore during exercise
- Training bras gently support bee-sting boobs
- Underwired bras give sturdier support to larger boobs
- Non-underwired bras can be more comfortable for petite chests
- Minimiser bras can shrink XXL chests
- Padded and push-up bras have the opposite effect
Then you can chose from lacy, plain, balcony, T-shirt and multiway bras.

Being Girl top tip
If you use Whisper when you’ve got your period there’s no need to wear horrid period pants. You are free to invest in lots of pretty knickers to match your gorgey new bra instead. Yay!
