No day brings out a mess of hormones in a teenage girl as quickly as Valentine's Day. If you are lucky enough to have a boyfriend, there's the whole gift/card/celebration quandary. If you don't, you feel like you are the only one on the planet not on the receiving end of poems and kisses and roses and chocolate. Well, we're here to separate the fun facts from fiction and let you in on some Valentine trivia!

Only the U.S., Canada, Mexico, France, Australia and England celebrate Valentine's Day.

Approximately one billion cards are sent each year, 85% of them by women! It is the second only to Christmas as a card-sending occasion. Hallmark has over 1330 different cards specifically for Valentine's Day. The oldest known card was sent in 1415A.D. by the Duke of Orleans to his French wife while he was imprisoned in the Tower of London. It still exists, on display.

Cupid was the mischievous winged child whose arrows pierced the hearts of his victims, causing them to fall deeply in love. To the Romans, he was the son of Venus, the Roman goddess of love. To the Greeks he was known as Eros, the son of Aphrodite.

The red rose, representing passion, is the most popular flower bought by guys for their girls. White roses symbolize true love; yellow roses are for friendship. Approximately 73% of all flower buyers are men, although 15% of women send themselves flowers on Valentine's Day!

In the Middle Ages, young men and women drew names from a bowl to see who their valentines would be. They would wear these names on their sleeves for a week. To wear your heart on your sleeve today means that it is easy for others to see how you're feeling.

In the 17th century a hopeful maiden ate a hard boiled egg and pinned five bay leaves to her pillow before going to sleep on Valentine's eve. It was believed this would make her dream of her future husband. (We notice it didn't promise he would appear… or send chocolates!)

Parents receive one out of every five Valentines. Teachers receive the most cards, followed by children, mothers, wives and THEN sweethearts!

The Italian city of Verona, where Romeo and Juliet lived, receives 1000 letters addressed to Juliet every Valentine's day.

February 14th was the wedding day of Elton John, Meg Ryan, Leeza Gibbons, Grateful Dead's Jerry Garcia, Roseanne, Pamela Anderson, Prince and Sharon Stone. (In the spirit of honesty, we regret to report that despite the most romantic of dates, 75% of these unions have ended in divorce!)
