The Lowdown on Vacation Jobs

It’s illegal to officially work until you’re 13. If you're under 15, you mustn’t work more than 15 hours a week (as if you'd want to anyway)

Even though you can’t wait to be free from that nerdy school uniform and make some proper money (do parents really think you can survive on SGD 100/- a month?!), it is very scary to be thinking so far ahead.

But, have no fear. The good news is it’s dead simple to work out what your dream job is. Follow these easy-peasy steps and you’ll be on the road to success in no time.

GET THEM TO BIG YOU UP

Ask your parents or friends to tell you what they think your main strength is. You’ll find that the same trait will crop up again and again. Whether you’re good with your hands, an extroverted wild-child, or you can solve madly difficult maths problems at the drop of a hat, you’re bound to have one skill that shines through. AND all that praise will boost your self-esteem. Result!

WHAT DO YOU LOVE DOING?

Now match your skills to what you enjoy doing, in school or out of school. For instance, if you’re the person all your friends call when they’re in hot water and you get off on solving the problem, a career in counselling could be your idea of heaven. If you’re a genius at writing short stories and always have your nose in a gossip magazine, why not aim for a job in journalism?

But you don’t necessarily have to follow your strengths - if you’re top in Chemistry but find it mind-numbingly dull, work harder at the subjects that don’t make you drop off to sleep.

SET IT IN MOTION

Now that you know what lucky career will suit you, put it into action. Make an appointment to see a careers advisor at school – it may sound about as exciting as detention, but I promise they’ll be bursting with ideas. Do a search on Google to find out more, like how much dosh you’ll get for it. Even write off to people already in that job for advice.

Then plot out a dream job timeline, targeting what you want to have done and by when. You’ll be ten times more likely to get there. You go girl

talk about it girl. i'm a flyer distributor too. it's frustrating when people just ignore you when you hand out the flyers to them. i mean, don't they have any courtesy to say no thanks or even smile? sometimes i feel like shouting to them, "KARMA!". these people don't understand how it feels like to work as one. hope one day they will feel what we feel. so now everytime im offered a flyer even though its boring or whatsoever, i will make the girl's job easier by accepting it and saying thank you nicely cos it will make her day. so people! please show some courtesy to the poor flyer distributors. don't look down on them because you don't know the struggle that they are going through just to earn that money. i hope i get this message across so everyone is treated nicely.

I was once a girl waiting by the escalator giving out hopeless flyers that ppl use as tissue paper after they read. SIGH.
