My parents hate my boyfriend!!

You think that he's the greatest thing since sliced bread. He sends your heart fluttering every time you see him. You want to spend every possible moment with him. You don't understand- how can your parents not like him?

If your parents are like thousands of parents, they may not like the person you're dating. Remember it's difficult for them to deal with your emerging sexuality. They just want to protect you and keep you safe and happy. So put yourself in your parent's shoes to figure out why they have a problem with your guy.

There's a big age difference

If you're 14 and the guy is 25, then your parents are right and have the law on their side. A relationship between an adult man and a developing teenager is totally inappropriate. If the difference is a year or two, reassure your parents by explaining what you two have in common, and you're mature enough to not let him pressure you.

They hate the way he dresses, his piercing, or his tattoo

Styles have changed big time since your parents were young and tattoos were for sailors. Accept that your parents will hate the way every guy you date dresses, and instead point out his good features- he's a computer whiz or he's on the football team.

You spend every waking moment with him

Your parents think he may be controlling you or that you're "missing out". Let them know you're making time for your friends or that your choice of university is strictly yours. Assure them that there are other things in your life besides this guy.

He does drugs or abuses you

You have no room to disagree and you should get out of this relationship- NOW.

What you can do

Here are some things you can do to help your parents change their minds about your guy.

Don't sneak off

You'll just reinforce their beliefs that they can't trust you and you can't handle grown up situations.

Respect your curfew

Be home when your parents want you home. Over time they'll see that you and he can be trusted.

Plan an event at your house

Invite your guy to dinner or to watch a movie. Let your parents see first hand that your guy is wonderful and treats you well.

Give your parents time

Take the relationship slowly and give them time to adjust. If he's the great guy you say he is, they'll come around.
