Best Friends

Just a few days ago you were the best of friends, sharing those deep dark secrets and getting into all sorts of trouble together. When, out of the blue, your bond is suddenly broken. It seems like the end of the world. "This is one of the most upsetting things that can happen to a teen,"says Pam Steele, a teenage psychologist. "You already feel fragile, as the teenage years are the most stressful of your life. Your best mate is your rock, who you turn to above your parents for advice. But don't fret. All friendships hit rough patches and the good news is that you can come out of the other side more inseparable than ever."

New Squeeze Syndrome
You were over the moon when she was asked out by that fit lad, but now you're feeling ignored and pushed aside. Pam says, "Don't take it personally as I'm sure you may do the same to them sometime! It's very unlikely to be deliberate; she's probably neglecting everyone, apart from her new squeeze. Check out your other friends for nights out but don't freeze her out. When the novelty of her new boyfriend fades, she'll come running back to you."

Scene Shifting
She's got into dance classes or house music and suddenly has a whole new network of friends. "Instead of feeling abandoned why not find a new hobby yourself," says Pam. "This way, you'll meet loads of new people too. It is healthy for both of you to have other friends and interests, otherwise the friendship can get claustrophobic."

In the Heat of the Moment
You had a massive argument and both said horrible things you didn't mean. You don't know how to take it all back. Pam says, "At first it doesn't seem possible that you will ever forgive each other. Take some space for both of you to chill out and then the only thing you can do is to march up to them and apologise outright. If you find that too nerve-wracking, send her a card or a letter."

Two-Faced Troubles
You've discovered she's been talking about you behind your back. "You feel terribly betrayed," says Pam. "She's effectively thrown your trust back in your face. Often this happens if your friend is angry at you or jealous of you. Challenge her about what she has done and get to the bottom of why. Then you can begin to repair the breakdown of trust."
